Aviva, leading European group for life insurance and pensions, as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility, is collaborating in Spain with the Orbayu Foundation in the implementation of four projects of providing microcredit for development in the city of Quito (Ecuador). This initiative is part of the actions set out in the CSR plan that Aviva is carrying out to support the community, promote volunteer work and raise awareness of the development of projects in which it is collaborating.
In particular, the microloans are to go to four women living in the Ecuadorian capital who require funding to develop small personal business projects enabling them to improve their quality of life and that of their families. One business project is that of Geomar Mendoza, who is married with five children, and who needs the money to expand her current business of selling fish from a portable stall. Another is Carmen Erazo, who is married with three children, and whose paralysis requires her to remain lying down. To help support her family, she is applying for the microcredit in order to purchase the materials she needs to make the handicraft which she will then sell.
Ignacio Izquierdo, managing director of Aviva and board member of the Orbayu Foundation, states that: “For Aviva, it is an honour to collaborate on such an important project as the one Orbayu is carrying out in Latin America. The smartphone application has been a hit in terms of downloads in the brief period of time it has been on the market and we are delighted that it can lead to an initiative such as microcredit”. He added that: “One of the key elements that allow a society to prosper is the spirit of small businesses to strive for achievement”.
Since its launch, two weeks ago, the retirement calculator application has recorded 1,809 downloads in the Android Market and 2,193 downloads in the Apple Store. The tool is very easy to use and is intended for the general public. It is updated according to the latest changes in income tax and is capable of giving an estimate of the amount of pension to be received upon retirement. It also takes into account the particular situation of each user in terms of contributions, salary and the possibility of supplementing state benefits with private plans.
The Orbayu Foundation, whose board includes representatives from Aviva, ESIC and the missionaries of the congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SCJ), aims to promote economic and social development in some of the poorest areas of South America and Africa through granting microcredit. In addition to this project, Aviva is working with the foundation through other initiatives such as payroll solidarity, in which the company contributes two euros a month for each donation made by employees through their payroll. Furthermore, 50% of money raised through corporate voluntary actions carried out in the company goes to Orbayu.
