UK: I-Spy something not beginning with... Angry Birds

A survey released today by RAC has revealed that, even in the current digital age, traditional car game such as I-Spy and the "Number Plate Game" are still being played by over a third (40%) of all British families on journeys.

  • Survey reveals traditional car journey games are still holding strong despite the rise of mobile gaming.

A survey1 released today by RAC has revealed that, even in the current digital age, traditional car game such as I-Spy and the "Number Plate Game" are still being played by over a third (40%) of all British families on journeys.

Interestingly, the survey found that despite the overwhelming success of Angry Birds, which is played by over 40 million active users2, just one in 10 (11%) Brits are using the electronic puzzle game as a means of keeping their families and passengers entertained on trips.

RAC have also revealed the top three most stressful aspects of car journeys as:

  1. Traffic jams - 55%
  2. High fuel prices - 14%
  3. Breaking down - 13.8%

To ensure both kids and parents get the most out of their journeys, RAC has launched www.whatsmyjourney.co.uk, a place for sharing fantastic journeys – the route, the pictures and the memories.

Nick Giles, head of marketing for RAC, comments: “We have a vested interest in all parts of people’s journeys and feel it’s great to see that traditional car games such as I-Spy and the Number Plate Game still have their place in our family journeys. Parents appear to be prioritising family interaction over long journeys. However we feel the rise of portable electronic entertainment as more and more inevitable. Over the past year we’ve seen a massive rise in the number cars fitted with portable TVs and the numbers of app and game enabled devices being taken on trips.”

“Part of the reason we’ve launched whatsmyjourney.co.uk is to ensure that all journeys are as pleasurable and memorable as possible. On the site we’ve provided advice as to how families can keep their children entertained, and we hope that the public will join us in sharing their top tips.”

Also to alleviate the stress induced by traffic jams, RAC has produced the RAC Traffic and RAC Traffic Plus apps for both iPhone and Android Smartphones. For further information visit rac.co.uk/news-advice/car-knowledge/trafficapp/
