Aviva Poland has won the annual British-Polish Chamber of Commerce competition in the “CSR Initiative of the Year” category for 2009. The award, for the Aviva Foundation, was presented at the BPCC gala in Warsaw on 29 April.
"As a socially responsible company, we want to do something concrete, which helps to solve problems and is not just a marketing trick. We want to fill a distinct gap in a way which makes a difference.
"This was our approach when we came up with the idea to support Polish disabled sports people. Now, with monthly Aviva Foundation scholarships, they find it easier to reconcile the demands of training with their everyday life,” said Dominika Kraśko-Białek, Aviva Poland vice-president and marketing director.
Aviva Poland established its corporate foundation in 2009 as an important element of its CR strategy. From this, the foundation launched a long-term project of support for Polish sports people preparing for the London 2012 Paralympics. Working with the Polish Paralympic Committee, Aviva provides 50 sports people and 18 of their trainers with monthly scholarships.
At the last Paralympics in Bejing in 2008, the Polish team won 30 medals, including five golds.
Recently the Aviva Foundation was granted “organisation of public benefit” status which allows taxpayers to donate 1% of their personal income tax to the athletes.
