UK: Top specialists in clinical care join Aviva Health

Aviva UK Health has further enhanced its reputation for clinical excellence with the appointment of a chief surgical officer and the creation of a specialist medical advisory board.

Aviva UK Health has further enhanced its reputation for clinical excellence with the appointment of a chief surgical officer and the creation of a specialist medical advisory board.

Mr Tom Dehn of the Royal Berkshire Hospital and a past Huntarian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons, joins Aviva UK Health as chief surgical officer. He will be working closely with Dr Hugh Laing, Aviva UK Health’s chief medical officer to provide additional expertise and consultancy in surgical matters.

He joins experts from a wide range of specialties, who have been appointed to support Aviva’s specialist claims teams, contribute to its clinical strategy and provide expert opinion on medical advancements. The high profile board will include Prof Peter Johnson, a professor in clinical oncology, Dr Huon Gray, consultant cardiologist, Mr Neil Thomas, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and Dr Jonathan Fielden, consultant anaesthetist, as well as specialists in ophthalmology and radiotherapy.

In addition, Aviva has significantly expanded its claims management function to cover nine different specialties. These were introduced following the success of Aviva’s psychiatric case management, oncology and women’s health units all of which have proven to significantly improve the service offered to customers.

The six new teams follow the same proven formula, offering customers a dedicated point of contact throughout their claim. Claims assessors have been specially chosen for their empathetic approach, communications skills and expert knowledge in handling claims relating to the specific condition their team supports. The specialist teams include nurses and clinicians and work alongside charities such as MacMillan Cancer Support.

Aviva’s dedicated teams are now available for the following specialties:

  • Orthopaedic
  • Gastro-intestinal
  • Urology
  • Cardiac-thoracic
  • Head and neck
  • Dermatology and systemic disorders
  • Musculoskeletal
  • Oncology
  • Psychiatric
  • Women’s health.

Mandy Wrenn, head of PMI claims, said: "At Aviva we understand that giving customers access to teams that tailor their treatment plans to the individual’s personal needs, has a far better out-come for all parties. This has been clearly demonstrated through previous successes, such as the recent  introduction of our Back-Up service delivered through our dedicated musculoskeletal team. We know that individuals recover quicker and employers benefit from reduced sickness absence costs, while our medical insurance claims costs - and therefore future premium increases - are controlled.

"We are extremely proud of our claims teams which have already delivered numerous benefits for our customers. The feedback we've received is absolutely fantastic and we’re delighted more of our customers can now benefit from this excellent breadth of knowledge.”
