Ireland: Looking out for Monaghan farmers - Hibernian Aviva hosts farm safety seminar in Carrickmacross

Farm safety was top of the agenda in Monaghan last week as almost 50 farmers attended a Hibernian Aviva farm safety seminar held at the Shirley Arms Hotel, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. The seminar provided a forum for Monaghan farmers to discuss the many safety risks facing farmers and to share best practice in improving farm safety. John Cannon, Hibernian Aviva farm safety expert in the company’s Monaghan branch, led the discussion and shared key farm safety tips.

The seminar also discussed research findings published this year by the Health and Safety Authority, which found that 30% of workplace accidents happen on farms and are typically caused by accidents involving farming machinery and equipment.

Commenting on these findings, John Cannon of Hibernian Aviva said: “The research shows that farms are one of the main places that workplace accidents take place. It is our hope that the Hibernian Aviva farm safety seminar will promote safety awareness and enhance risk management to help reduce the likelihood of injury or death taking place on Monaghan farms”.

He continued: “My key recommendation to Monaghan farmers is to focus on safety at all times and particularly around machinery, as the majority of farm accidents involve machinery. Some key safety tips include:

  • Always remember to have the hand brake on and cab locked when tractors are not in use.
  • Ensure all vehicles and trailers have mirrors, lights and indicators in good working order.
  • Ensure any chain saws are fitted with a chain brake, safety chain, chain catcher, chain breakage guard and safety throttle.”

As part of Hibernian Aviva’s promise to look out for the needs of farmers, the company provides a farm safety consultation service to help deliver a complete, flexible insurance package that covers farm property, produce and vehicles, liabilities and income replacement to help Monaghan farmers protect their business and livelihood. “Hibernian Aviva understands Monaghan farmers’ needs and we have over 100 years farm insurance experience behind us. As Ireland’s largest and most trusted insurer we work hard to deliver insurance solutions that help protect Monaghan farmers in their workplace”, said John Carron of Hibernian Aviva.
