- Hibernian Aviva and Point of Care team up to launch nationwide series of cervical cancer education classes
Hibernian Aviva Health, the first health insurer to cover the Cervical Cancer Vaccine (CCV), has launched a cervical cancer education and prevention campaign in partnership with specialist nursing provider Point of Care. The initial series of cervical cancer education and prevention seminars take place over the summer months and will provide information on what cervical cancer is and how to prevent it. The seminars are specifically designed to appeal to mums with daughters over the age of 12 and it is hoped that the campaign will result in up to 1,000 young women in Ireland getting vaccinated against this preventable cancer.
Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer in women under 45 and with vaccination and screening it is cancer that is preventable. Research shows that up to 80% of women will come into contact with the virus that can cause cervical cancer and in Ireland every year approximately 180 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed. Over one million women globally have already been vaccinated against the disease and it is estimated that over 300,000 women across Ireland who could be at risk of cervical cancer should seek vaccination.
Speaking about the cervical cancer vaccine, Bernadette Carter, Point of Care cancer specialist nurse and key speaker at the cervical cancer seminars said: “The vaccine offers a 99% success rate against the two types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which are responsible for 70% of cases of cervical cancer. It is recommended to young girls of age 12 years and upwards because it is best administered before they become sexually active to be most effective. The vaccine really gives women the chance to protect themselves from cervical cancer and take control of their health”.
The first round of education seminars will be held at Point of Care clinics and other venues throughout Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kildare and Westmeath and will take place from 23 July to 10 September. The education seminars will be delivered by a cancer specialist nurse and details of the time, date and location of the cervical cancer education classes are available at www.hibernianavivahealth.ie
Commenting on the initiative, Jim Dowdall, managing director of Hibernian Aviva Health said: “Hibernian Aviva Health, along with Point of Care, believes that education is a cornerstone of prevention when it comes to cervical cancer. This important education and prevention campaign is designed for concerned parents throughout Ireland and we are pleased to be able to help in the battle against cervical cancer. We are committed to looking out for the health needs of our customers and we hope that this campaign not only provides a forum for women to learn about cervical cancer but that it also encourages women to take action and vaccinate themselves against this preventable disease”.
Jim Joyce, CEO of Point of Care added: "This initiative will enable us, through our nationwide network of GP clinics, to vaccinate over 1,000 young Irish women against cervical cancer causing viruses. Our job is to help make the process of vaccination affordable and accessible. We have a nurse supported call centre that will answer questions and find the closest GP clinic location."
