Aviva France, a major player in life insurance and long-term savings, asset management and non-life insurance, is helping to raise awareness of diversity in the workplace amongst its staff. Having signed the Diversity Charter last October, Aviva France has put in place an educational game on diversity, which has been distributed internally.
As the world's fifth-largest insurance company with a presence in 27 countries, Aviva has always boasted a workforce made up of people from a very broad range of countries and backgrounds. This is why Aviva sets such store by making a virtue of differences, in order to ensure that all of its staff settle in well and work together well as a team. For Aviva, the best way of promoting and respecting diversity in the workplace is to do plenty of groundwork on identifying potentially discriminatory practices.
It was with this groundwork in mind that Aviva France's mother company in London designed and developed an educational game tool to help raise awareness of diversity in the workplace amongst its staff. Due to the success of this game in the UK, Aviva France had it translated and brought it across the Channel for its staff to benefit from.
The diversity game is based around several scenarios featuring a manager and staff members in situations dealing with diversity. The Flash animation game, which is accessible via the Aviva France intranet, is presented in the form of questions with several possible answers. Its subtlety lies in the fact that none of the answers appears more likely than the others, meaning that it gets its players thinking. These scenarios allow staff to become properly aware of just how important it is to respect diversity in the workplace.
Aviva's approach and the innovative concept of the diversity game won it the UN Global Compact prize for "Diversity and Innovation" in June 2007.
