France: Aviva France making its employees more aware of diversity with United Nations global compact award-winning educational game

Aviva France, a major player in the sectors of life insurance and pensions, asset management and non-life insurance, is making its employees more aware of diversity within the company. Having signed the Diversity Charter last October, Aviva France has now developed an educational game on the topic of diversity, for internal distribution.

As the world's fifth largest insurer with a presence in 27 countries, Aviva draws together a workforce composed of people from many parts and of greatly differing origins. Accordingly, Aviva makes a specific point of making the most of these differences so as to guarantee the proper integration of all of its employees and to make sure that they are all able to work together. For Aviva, promoting and respecting diversity within the company takes the form of in-depth work undertaken to identify potentially discriminatory practices.

It is with this in mind that Aviva France's parent company in London proceeded to design and develop an educational tool in the form of a game aimed at making employees more aware of the diversity which exists within the company. On the strength of the success the game has enjoyed on the other side of the Channel, Aviva France has now had it translated and distributed to its workforce.

The diversity game is based on a number of scenarios presenting a manager and employees in situations centred around the subject of diversity. It can be accessed through Aviva France's intranet in flash animation and takes the form of a series of questions with multiple-choice answers. The subtlety of the game lies in the fact that none of the solutions is immediately obvious and so the intention is to make the individual think. Putting people in these situations will make them really think about the need to respect the diversity which exists within the company.

This Aviva initiative and the innovative concept for the diversity game were awarded the United Nations Global Compact "Diversity and Innovation" prize in June 2007.
