Germany: Risk of disablement - school children should be covered too

Experts advise parents to cover their children against disablement while they are still at school. School children may not yet have a job, but they can still lose their future ability to work due to an accident or a serious illness.

Along with health and liability insurance, disability insurance is one of the most important forms of insurance. After all, without this cover, the loss of the ability to work and therefore earn an income often leads to social isolation. If the worst happens, the younger generation are hit particularly hard as they can no longer rely on the State. Since 2001 statutory disability cover no longer applies to those born in 1961 or later. Only a reduction of earning capacity is covered - and you are normally only entitled to this if you have made statutory pension contributions for at least five years. However, you only receive the full benefit if you are no longer able to exercise any activity for even three hours a day.

Experts therefore advise parents to cover their children against disablement while they are still at school. School children may not yet have a job, but they can still lose all or part of their future ability to work due to an accident or a serious illness.

The earlier the better
The advantages of such early cover are obvious: Young insureds have lower health expenses. Also the premiums are much lower for young people. With Delta Lloyd's rates, ranked top by independent rating firms, these are just €18 a month for a monthly disability pension of €1,000 for a 15 year old school child, for example. Until the end of the year, the Weisbaden financial services provider is offering its school children's disability insurance policies on particularly attractive terms: During this period, parents can take out a policy for an annuity of up to €12,000. If the children have finished their schooling, training or studies, the insurance cover can be extended with a follow-on policy - without a further medical. So, the children are fully covered now and in the future.
