UK: RAC steps up night-time patrols to meet 24:7 breakdown demand

RAC has increased the number of its fleet of night-time breakdown patrols in response to the UK’s growing round-the clock driving culture.

Over the last year, the number of RAC patrols turning out in major UK cities between midnight and 6 am has risen by nearly a third. [actual figure 30%] As well as more patrols, the company’s breakdown service now includes a night-time fleet of dedicated RAC flatbed trucks to remove vehicles that can’t be fixed at the roadside, and RAC’s mobile phone location system for members who have broken down and are unsure of where they are.

“We now respond to 76,000 breakdowns a year between the hours of 11pm and 5 am. Customer feedback has shown us that not surprisingly, people feel particularly vulnerable between these hours,” said Dave Young, head of roadside delivery at RAC. “They can feel isolated, unsure of where they are, and desperate to get home safely. That is why we have stepped up the number of RAC patrols to complement our existing network of contractors.

“The overnight service includes an option that is unique to RAC – the technology to track people’s mobile phones if they aren’t sure where they are. Obviously at night, it’s particularly important to be able to get to the broken down vehicle as quickly as possible.

“With the growth in the 24:7 culture, increasing numbers of shift workers and the increase in vehicles carrying goods by road at night, this offering was a natural progression in our quest to offer our members the best possible service.”
