UK: HPI acquires warranty mileage data from Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover

HPI has upped its campaign against “clocking” with a new agreement to receive warranty mileage information directly from Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover.

HPI has upped its campaign against “clocking” with a new agreement to receive warranty mileage information directly from Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover.

This latest data acquisition will see the company’s National Mileage Register (NMR) increase by more than seven million high quality mileage readings.

The NMR – the UK’s largest database of mileage readings, processing about two million checks a year - is designed to protect both dealers and consumers from mileage discrepancies. Daniel Burgess, from HPI automotive, says: “Clocking and undisclosed odometer changes are still a major concern for the industry, with many dealers still facing legal action for not investigating and reporting the correct mileage. Capturing mileage data is the only way the industry can hope to eradicate the sale of clocked vehicles by a minority of unscrupulous traders.”

The NMR now holds in excess of 89 million mileages on the database, collated from many sources including the DVLA, BVRLA, motor manufacturers, warranty companies, dealers and consumers. Mileages, taken at the time of any warranty work carried out by manufacturers and their dealer network, have proven to be a very accurate source of mileage data.

Daniel Burgess adds: “BMW UK has been providing us with regular batches of warranty mileage data for some years, and with Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover data being added to the National Mileage Register on a monthly basis, the data we hold will be enhanced. As a result of our commitment to providing the highest quality and depth of vehicle provenance data, we are urging the trade to record and check mileages at every opportunity.

“The HPI NMR Investigation Service already offers dealers invaluable protection, helping them to avoid prosecution for selling clocked vehicles and securing the quality and value of their stock.

“Ford Motor Company is working with us to help the industry operate best practice for the benefit of consumers and dealers alike. We’re also in discussions with a number of other motor manufacturers regarding the provision of warranty mileage data with the aim to make this quality of data provision a standard across the industry.”

About HPI
Originally established in 1938, HPI Limited is a primary source of vehicle information for the UK motor industry and motoring consumer, which since August 2004 has been owned by Norwich Union. HPI encompasses both the HPI database of all UK road registered vehicle descriptions and histories, and the National Mileage Register which holds in excess of 85 million mileage readings.

Together, HPI and NMR represent the UK's largest vehicle information source, combining and interpreting data from government agencies, industry bodies, private organisations, the police and the general public. Registering with HPI helps companies to protect their financial interests in motor vehicles and a wide range of other mobile assets. HPI Checks give purchasers instant confirmation of whether vehicles are correctly described, known to be subject to outstanding finance or serious accident damage, or recorded as stolen or "clocked".
