Hibernian General Insurance announced today that it is increasing its penalty points free discount to 17.5% for new and existing qualifying customers from 1 November 2004. The announcement is in keeping with its strategy to encourage safe and responsible driving.
Dick O’Driscoll, managing director, Hibernian General Insurance, said: "Hibernian has campaigned for and supported the penalty points scheme from its introduction. There is an opportunity for insurers to reinforce the initial success of penalty points. By increasing the penalty points free discount we offer, we are giving a further incentive to our customers to maintain a penalty points free licence.
"We made a commitment to our customers that if the momentum created by the insurance reform agenda, spearheaded by the Motor Insurance Advisory Board, was maintained, then responsible customers would see this reflected in the cost of their motor insurance. The increase in the penalty points discount is another step in delivering on this commitment."
Last November, marking the first anniversary of the penalty points scheme, Hibernian introduced a 10% discount for penalty points free drivers. Hibernian has continued to implement initiatives to reward safe and responsible drivers and reduce the cost of motor insurance for its customers, including:
- continuing reductions in motor insurance premium rates
- further expanding the Ignition programme, which 1,200 inexperienced drivers currently undertake per month. Successful participants can avail of up to 40% off their motor premium
- repeating the Ignition "Driver of the Year" competition
- giving a 30% discount to drivers with a recognised advanced driving qualification (IAM, RoSPA)
- reducing the eligibility period for a 5% loyalty bonus from 10 years to three years.
To qualify for the penalty points free discount, drivers are required to provide their driver number to Hibernian. The driver number is unique to each driver and detailed on each driver’s licence. The number enables Hibernian to verify the penalty points status of the licence with the National Driver File. Drivers yet to provide their driver number to Hibernian are encouraged to do so well in advance of their renewals in November.
