UK: Lack of holiday car cover can cause major headaches, Norwich Union warns fleet managers

Company car drivers face being stranded abroad unless they have adequate insurance cover for overseas travel, according to Norwich Union.

The insurer is urging fleet managers to check their policies before staff head for the Continent in company vehicles this summer.

Andy Keane, senior motor underwriter, says: “Most fleet policies will provide the minimum legal requirement of cover for foreign travel. This tends to insure only third-party injury and vehicle damage in the event of a traffic accident.

“Unless the driver has the full policy benefits that he would expect to have in this country, he runs the risk of having to pay for damage to his own car, plus recovery and repatriation.

“Fleet managers need to inform drivers of any cover limitations in driving abroad and come to some arrangement to protect staff in case of accidents.”

In addition, Norwich Union recommends that fleet managers provide staff with a travel abroad pack, including advice and guidance on the rules of the road in different countries and information on breakdown recovery.
