France: To contribute to palliating the inequalities of educational support, the Aviva Foundation supports the Zup de Co association

Every year, more than 140,000 young people leave school with no qualifications.

Every year, more than 140,000 young people leave school with no qualifications. According to the 2007 Report of the Higher Council of Education, four pupils out of 10 are handicapped by serious gaps in their knowledge of the "3 r’s", the major cause of which is linked to the lack of school support.

The Aviva Foundation, created in 1999 under the aegis of the Fondation de France, signed a three-year partnership with the Zup de Co association which provides school support action with students from under-privileged families. The partnership’s objectives are to reinforce support to the students on the subject of career choices, the financing and development of the association, as well as the continuation of the extension of awareness action of Zup de Co.

Zup de Co: an educational procedure for school support
In order to overcome the educational failure of children from under-privileged families, the Zup de Co association, created in 2005, decided to take action upstream, relying on the voluntary work of students from a large school or university.

The students of classes six to three who were identified as being in difficulty, were individually taken on by a student who gave them support at school for two hours a week in order to allow them to obtain their high school qualifications at the end of the third year. In 2009, the rate of students assisted by Zup de Co in third year who had obtained their high school qualification stood at 71% (compared with the result in ZEP of 66.7%).

The commitment of this association, the slogan of which is “let’s scrub the inequalities” fits perfectly within the framework of the actions set up more than 10 years ago by the Fondation Aviva among the weakest populations, comprising children. This is why the Fondation Aviva has set up this three-year partnership with an overall budget amounting to €210,000.

The three objectives of the partnership

  • To reinforce the support provided to young students in their choice of career in order to allow them to see in practice the diversity of choices offered to them. Several actions have been planned: the organisation of an open day within the company, the recording by Aviva collaborators of video testimonies on their professions and careers or again, the hosting of third grade pupils within the framework of their obligatory work experience course.
  • To finance the development of the activities of the association, particularly thanks to the local creation of Zup de Co branches in the regions, at one per year (three in all) and thus allow more than 400 young people to be assisted.
  • To continue and extend the action of Zup de Co against school failure through awareness among Aviva’s collaborators and clients.

This partnership was set within the framework of the Street to School programme launched by the Aviva Group, sixth largest insurer in the world, in April 2009. This patronage is provided with a view to giving hope to children who have failed at school, with a target of reaching 500,000 the world over.
