Pakistan floods - Aviva and Oxfam's emergency aid effort

Aviva continues to support Oxfam in their response to the flooding in Pakistan.

Aviva has a long term partnership with Oxfam 365 to help them respond with immediate aid when a disaster strikes. We’re continuing to support Oxfam in their response to the flooding in Pakistan.

The Pakistan floods are now being described as “the world’s worst current disaster” by the UN, and Oxfam is calling for a “gear shift” in the response to it. Almost 14 million people are now affected by the floods, according to the latest figures, and that number is likely to increase with water now surging south.

Neva Khan, Oxfam GB country director in Pakistan says: “The rains are continuing and each hour that passes the flooding is multiplying misery across the entire country. Swathes of Pakistan are still underwater and people have seen homes, shops, schools and crops flattened. The world must not leave these people stranded. This is a mega disaster and it needs a mega response.”

So far Aviva’s support has helped Oxfam to reach more than 170,000 people with clean drinking water and hot meals, helped local groups evacuate 80,000 stranded people.

The scale of the global response to the flooding pales in comparison to other recent disasters: according to the UN’s financial tracking system, the amount pledged by nations around the world as of 9 August works out as only $3.20 per affected person in Pakistan. To put this in perspective, the amount committed to the Haiti earthquake after ten days worked out to $495 per person.

Neva Khan continued: “This is the biggest disaster in the world right now and we all need to get behind it.”
