Aviva has joined other large companies in Poland to co-found the "10 April Foundation". Among other children, the foundation will specifically help the children of victims of the recent plane crash near Smolensk in Russia, which killed 96 people, including the Polish president, on 10 April.

The plane crashed en route to ceremonies marking the anniversary of the massacre of almost 22,000 Polish officers and officials by the Soviet authorities in 1940.

The foundation will also help children of victims of other catastrophic events and children whose parents die while on public duty, in particular, by securing scholarships for their education. Founders will provide the organisation with free-of-charge banking, legal, asset management and other services.

Right after the Smolensk tragedy, Aviva Poland made efforts to secure swift payment of life insurance claims and transfers of pension fund assets to victims’ families. Simplified procedures and support from government agencies allowed Aviva make more than a dozen payments, accompanied by personal letters from management.

“Payment of claims is our basic duty as an insurer which offers concrete assistance to families. I am glad to say that our reaction to this tragedy sets an example and I would like to thank all involved staff members and insurance advisors,” Maciej Jankowski, Aviva Poland CEO.
