On 8 December 2008, the environmental NGO Les Amis de la Terre published a report on the climate policies of insurers in France. This study assessed, using criteria defined by the NGO, whether environmental challenges were taken into account in the global policy, insurance products and fund management of the main players in the French insurance market. As a company highly committed to sustainable development, Aviva was identified in the report as one of the most advanced companies in these areas, in particular for its climate change policy and its general insurance products.
Indeed, Aviva develops products and implements sales policies that encourage customers and prospects to adopt an ecological outlook. For several months now, the company has been reducing premiums for drivers who use their vehicles less (low-mileage and per-mile insurance) or who drive vehicles that emit less than 130g of CO2 per kilometre. In home insurance, Aviva encourages green actions, such as through the New Energy Pack, which was set up in 2007 and allows customers to insure solar panels and cells.
In 2009, Aviva introduced an innovative pricing policy benefiting users of public transport, and the Vélocité Pack, which provides risk cover for car users who regularly travel by bicycle.
Reduced insurance premiums for public transport season ticket holders
Policyholders who purchase annual public transport season ticket benefit from a 10% discount on their car insurance premiums (excluding packs) and get the Vélocité Pack for free. This reduction is applicable every year, and may be applied in conjunction with other reductions.
This product has been undergoing testing since December 2008 in the following departments: 75, 77, 78, 91, 92, 93, 94 and 95.
Vélocité Pack insures bicycle travel for the entire family
The Vélocité Pack is available for €18 per year as an option with a car insurance or comprehensive home policy taken out with Aviva. It covers civil liability and accidental damage for policyholders who use their bicycles regularly. It also covers the policyholder's spouse and/or children residing permanently at their home address. This allows policyholders to protect their families from personal injury or material damage caused to third parties, as well as any loss suffered personally if they are involved in an accident while riding their bicycles.
In the event of an accident resulting in the death of one or more beneficiaries of the pack while riding a bicycle, Aviva pays the beneficiaries €30,000 per victim (limited to funeral expenses up to 12 years and halved beyond 75 years). Furthermore, Aviva pays for the following, regardless of depreciation through age and up to €500 overall and per victim:
- Repair of damage caused to the bicycle or replacement, whether it belongs to the insured party or is rented or borrowed,
- Compensation for damage caused to personal effects in the event of a collision with an identified third party.
