The future of a Chesterfield boxing academy, which aims to divert the energies of young people from crime and anti social behaviour into lawful sporting activity, has been secured thanks to a £10,000 donation from Auto Windscreens.
Spire Boxing Academy, which has members as young as 10 years old, will use the donation to pay running costs for the next 12 months as well as a contribute to equipment and travel to competitions.
Founded by former professional boxer Robbie Sivyer, who initially funded the project by re-mortgaging his home, he commented on Auto Windscreens' donation saying: "I believe strongly in this club. It has already improved lives and is now important to many people young and old in the Chesterfield area."
Based on Thompson Street at Whittington Moor, the Academy has proved to be a huge success with more than a 1,000 youngsters passing through its doors since it opened in 2006.
Auto Windscreens managing director Abu-Haris Shafi, who presented the cheque to the Academy, commented on the donation saying: "Auto Windscreens is delighted to support projects such as Spire Boxing Academy, which have a positive impact on the wider community. They give young people a focus and a drive to succeed. Who knows; our donation might help produce Chesterfield's own Amir Kahn or Ricky Hatton."
Robbie added: "The thought of telling members and families the club could close due to lack of funds was always a worry but Auto Windscreens has removed that threat with its donation. Rent, maintenance and equipment will now be covered for the next 12 months. This leaves me free to focus on the members' fitness and skills without the financial worry: and for this the Academy and I are truly thankful."
The Academy currently trains 25 registered boxers as well as teaching a tough non-contact boxing programme. There is also a female boxing class held three times a week at the Academy.
