The much awaited National Safety Awards 2008 was held at Trans Asia Hotel recently, amidst a distinguished gathering with the minister of labour relations and manpower, Honourable Athauda Seneviratne as chief guest.
The much awaited National Safety Awards 2008 was held at Trans Asia Hotel recently, amidst a distinguished gathering with the minister of labour relations and manpower, Honourable Athauda Seneviratne as chief guest. The National Safety Awards was evolved by Eagle Insurance and is conducted in collaboration with the Department of Labour and the Employees Trust Fund Board.
Hirdaramani Industries (Pvt) Limited - Kahathuduwa led the list of winners in the large scale category with Shell Gas Lanka Ltd winning in the medium scale for their Central Filling Station at Sapugaskanda and Shell Terminal Lanka (Pvt) Ltd - Kerawalapitiya emerged as winners in the small scale category.
The first runners-up were Melbourne Textile Washing Plant (Pvt) Ltd - Wattala (large), Glaxo Wellcome Ceylon Ltd - Moratuwa (Medium) and Asia Power Station - Sapugaskanda (small). Ceylon Petroleum Corporation - Refinery Division, Sapugaskanda, Melbourne Textile Washing Plant (Pvt) Ltd - Mahiyangana, and AES Kelanitissa Pvt Ltd - Wellampitiya came second runners-up in the large, medium and small scale categories respectively.
There were eleven Sectoral award winners this year. In the manufacturing and processing sector, Smithkline Beecham (Pvt) Limited- Attidiya was the winner with BASF Finlay (Pvt) Ltd - Sapugaskanda being awarded runner-up. Merit awards were won by H J S Condiments Limited - Malwana, Chemical Industries Colombo Ltd, Ratmalana Works & BlueScope Lysaght Lanka (Pvt) Ltd - Sapugaskanda.
In the apparel and allied Iidustries sector, the winner was Paxar Lanka (Pvt) Ltd - Biyagama. MAS Active Pvt Ltd, Synergy Division- Avissawella was the runner up. Crystal Martin Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd - Wathupitiwala, Maliban Textiles Mahiyangana (Pvt) Ltd and EAM Maliban Textiles (Pvt) Ltd Dehiattakandiya were recipients of merit awards.
In the Engineering Services Ceylon Electricity Board - Ukuwela Power Station was the winner and Laugfs Gas (Pvt) Ltd- Mabima the runner-up.
There were no awards in the tea and plantations sector.
The evaluation panel comprised Sujatha Wijesundara (commissioner of labour (technical) and chief factories inspecting engineer), Rohitha Fernando (deputy commissioner of labour (technical) and deputy chief factories inspecting engineer), Senaka Amaratunga (senior research officer, occupational hygiene division, department of labour), V M Karunaratne (former deputy commissioner of labour and chief factories inspecting engineer), S Sivapaskaran (former deputy commissioner of labour and chief factories inspecting engineer), and Chula de Silva (past president of the Institute of Engineers, Sri Lanka).
The National Safety Award, held once in two years, was evolved by Eagle after identifying the need to enhance industrial safety in Sri Lanka. The award has become the benchmark of organizational commitment towards an accident-free workplace, leading to enhanced organizational and national productivity. The NSA was first awarded in 1994 and was inaugurated by his excellency president Mahinda Rajapakse, who was minister of labour and vocational training at the time. The event has become a prestigious and much anticipated day in the corporate calendar.
