RAC, one of the country’s most progressive motoring organisations, is committing itself to reducing environmental impact by becoming carbon neutral.

As part of the global initiative launched by its parent company, Aviva – the international savings, investment and insurance group – RAC is focusing efforts on reducing its own energy consumption and that of its members.

Its initiatives include:

  • Environmental programmes and procedures, including satellite navigation and intelligent deployment systems that reduce fuel consumption and patrol fleet congestion
  • Rescue vehicles maintained to the highest standards to ensure best fuel economy, and minimised toxic emissions
  • A repair before replacement policy adopted by RAC Auto Windscreens reduces the energy expended in the production of automotive glass
  • RAC-owned BSM’s driving instructors trained in green driving techniques
  • Green motoring advice provided directly to RAC members via newsletters, websites and television advertising.

Tom Oxley, corporate social responsibility manager for RAC, said: “As a forward thinking motoring business, we are doing what we can to mitigate the effects of climate change, which means reducing our own CO2 output and encouraging others to follow suit.

“Reducing energy consumption is one of three activities – along with sourcing emission-free electricity, which we already buy and carbon offsetting projects – that RAC and our parent company, Aviva, are actively pursuing in order to attain our goal of carbon neutrality.

“We are also keeping a keen eye on vehicle technology and low emission fuel provision so we can integrate these into our service and fleet vehicles in the future.”

About RAC
With around seven million members, RAC is one of the UK's most progressive motoring organizations, providing services for both private and business motorists. Whether it's roadside assistance, windscreen repair and replacement, learning to drive, vehicle inspections and checks, legal and financial services or up-to-the-minute traffic and travel information - RAC is able to meet motorists’ needs. RAC incorporates BSM, RAC Auto Windscreens, RAC Direct Insurance and HPI.

Aviva bought RAC in May 2005. The acquisition brings together RAC's powerful brand and customer base with the expertise and leading position in motor insurance of Norwich Union Insurance (part of Aviva). Norwich Union is the UK's largest insurer, insuring one in seven motor vehicles and with a market share of around 14%.
