The majority of polluting emissions from road traffic come from cars. Today, surrounded by trees in the Dutch Tree Centre, the insurer, Delta Lloyd, launched the Delta Lloyd Sustainable: Green Motor Insurance policy. The launch was attended by representatives of the Dutch National Climate Campaign HIER, the International Tree Fund and the Stichting Milieukeur (SMK) (Dutch Ecomark Organisation). Under this new sustainable initiative, harmful CO2 emissions from cars are offset. For each motor insurance policy taken out in the course of the scheme, Delta Lloyd will plant seven trees each year in sustainable forests. The premiums for Delta Lloyd Sustainable: Green Motor Insurance policies will also be invested on a sustainable basis. The Delta Lloyd Sustainable: Green Motor Insurance policy was awarded the HIER logo today as a sign that this insurance is climate neutral. This insurance policy is the first product in Delta Lloyd’s new Sustainable Product Line. With this new initiative, Delta Lloyd is helping private individuals and businesses to contribute to improving the environment.
Erica Blom, director marketing and sales Delta Lloyd Insurance: “This sustainable insurance fits in with our philosophy of focussing not only on the individual but also on the changing world around the individual. Social responsibility is obviously part of our reason for existing. Climate change is a fact and a cause for concern. So, green business is not hype but a must. A survey has shown that 55% of the population say that they want to take action with regard to socially responsible consumption. As an insurer, with this initiative, Delta Lloyd is helping private individuals and businesses to contribute to improving the environment.”
Initiative supported by several NGOs
The Dutch National Climate Campaign HIER, the International Tree Fund and SMK are supporting the initiative and were present at today’s launch.
The Delta Lloyd Sustainable: Green Motor Insurance policy has been awarded the HIER logo as a sign that this insurance is climate neutral. Sible Schöne, content coordinator of the National Climate Campaign HIER: “We are pleased to work with organisations which share our goal: to tackle the climate problem. Promoting climate friendly products to consumers is an important factor in this. We call on all companies to launch climate friendly products or to promote them more actively.”
The Delta Lloyd trees are being planted by the International Tree Fund (ITF) in specially selected sustainable forests. The ITF manages and monitors them.
Ineke Vlot, manager non-food for SMK: “Delta Lloyd has requested a Sustainability Barometer for the Delta Lloyd Sustainable: Green Motor Insurance policy. Delta Lloyd is the first financial services provider to take the initiative to create a Sustainability Barometer in conjunction with SMK. When we have designed this Sustainability Barometer for green motor insurance, Delta Lloyd will be able to have its product certified with an independent quality label that helps the client to opt for sustainable general insurance products.”
GroenLinks and VVD are also delighted that Delta Lloyd is offering a green option with this new motor insurance policy.
For GroenLinks the environment is an essential area with which they are faced and they are very pleased that the business world is beginning to pick up this signal too. Femke Halsema, chair of the parliamentary party GroenLinks: "Caring for the environment is no longer a party political issue. Caring for the environment is a concern for all of us. The CO2 offsetting of the Delta Lloyd Sustainable: Green Motor Insurance policy is the kind of initiative that makes it easier to look after the environment."
Mark Rutte, chair of the parliamentary party VVD: “In the battle against CO2 emissions, we have to tackle the problem at source. That means: cleaner cars and carbon filters. But we must not forget that everyone can do their bit. That’s why green initiatives like this policy deserve to be praised and above all copied.”
Sustainable consumption
Green initiatives are in great demand. A survey has shown that 25% of the population see themselves as socially responsible consumers. 30% of the population want to purchase responsibly/sustainably and 22% of the population want to purchase products that are environmentally friendly or have an ecomark. For businesses, it will eventually be a legal obligation imposed by governments to purchase socially responsible services for their car fleets.
