India: Aviva and Concern India Foundation help in the rehabilitation of the community in Colachel

Aviva and Concern India Foundation today donated 10 fishing-boats, to fishermen in Colachel as part of their tsunami rehabilitation work in India.

  • A substantial grant has been made available by Aviva towards rehabilitation of the victims of the tsunami in the Colachel area
  • Aviva and Concern India Foundation have together worked out a long term development programme for this area.
  • 10 boats are being given to fishermen in Colachel as part of the initial rehabilitation process

Aviva and Concern India Foundation today donated 10 fishing-boats, to fishermen in Colachel as part of their tsunami rehabilitation work in India.

This is one of the first initiatives following Aviva’s grant to Concern India Foundation for tsunami affected earlier this year. Shoba Rajan, branch manager, Concern India Foundation, Rajeev Arora, associate director Internal Audit from Aviva, and Nidhi Singh, manager – special assignments, Concern India Foundation handed over the boats to the fishermen at a simple ceremony in the Colachel village.

Vivek Khanna, director marketing, Aviva Life Insurance, said: "The scale of tragedy and suffering tsunami has caused are irreversible. Through this small gesture we hope to make a difference in the lives of fishermen."

Kavita Shah, CEO, Concern India Foundation, said: "The immediate need has been to restore the primary source of livelihood of the people affected by the tsunami. We are happy to hand over the boats to the fishermen of Colachel village which will positively impact the lives of 50 families." She added that this initiative is in keeping with the objective of Concern India Foundation in working towards self-reliance.
