Lex Service PLC appoints new Chairman

Service PLC, the motoring and vehicle solutions company, announces the appointment of Alan Bowkett as non-executive Chairman from 1 January 2003, succeeding Sir Trevor Chinn who retires at the end of 2002. Alan Bowkett will join the Board as Deputy Chairman on 2 September 2002.

Service PLC, the motoring and vehicle solutions company, announces the appointment of Alan Bowkett as non-executive Chairman from 1 January 2003, succeeding Sir Trevor Chinn who retires at the end of 2002. Alan Bowkett will join the Board as Deputy Chairman on 2 September 2002.

Alan Bowkett holds a portfolio of European non-executive roles, including non-executive director of the UK brewing company Greene King plc, where he is Chairman of the audit committee; Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Acordis BV, a Netherlands-based chemical and man-made fibres business; Chairman of Metzeler APS SA, a Benelux-based automotive components supplier; and European Adviser to private equity fund CVC Capital Partners.

Over the course of his career, Alan has held a number of senior executive positions, including Chief Executive of Berisford Plc, the food service equipment business; Chief Executive of RHP Bearings Ltd, the ball bearings manufacturer; and Chief Executive of Boulton and Paul plc, the building products business.

Sir Trevor Chinn, Chairman of Lex Service PLC, commented: "I am very pleased to welcome Alan to the company as we become RAC plc. Alan Bowkett

Aged 51, Alan Bowkett is married with five children. He holds a BSc in Economics from University College London and an MBA from London Business School.

He began his career as a researcher at the Economist Intelligence Unit and then worked for Lex as Corporate Planning Manager from 1977 to 1982.

His first Chief Executive role was for the building products company Boulton & Paul Plc; then for the ball bearing manufacturer RHP Bearings Ltd; and then the food service equipment business Berisford Plc.

Since 1993 he has been a non-executive director of a number of European companies, including the UK brewing company Greene King plc, (where he is Chairman of the audit committee); Acordis BV, a Netherlands-based chemical and man-made fibres business; and Metzeler APS SA, a Benelux-based automotive business. Alan is a fellow of the University of East Anglia and an organic farmer.

Sir Trevor Chinn

Sir Trevor Chinn, aged 66, was appointed to the Board of Lex Service PLC in 1959, became Managing Director in 1968 and Chairman in 1973. In addition he was Chief Executive from 1973 to 1996. Sir Trevor is Vice Chairman of the Commission for Integrated Transport, which was set up to advise the government on the implementation of the Transport White Paper published in 1998. He is also Chairman of the Motorists' Forum which consults with government on issues affecting motorists.
