UK: Norwich Union Risk Services receives IOSH accreditation

Norwich Union Risk Services has become the first training provider to achieve accreditation from IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) for their ‘Permit to Work’ course.

Norwich Union Risk Services has become the first training provider to achieve accreditation from IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) for their ‘Permit to Work’ course.

The status enables Norwich Union Risk Services trainers to carry out end-of-course assessments for participants, who will subsequently receive a certificate from IOSH acknowledging their completion of the course.

Graham Smith, consultant with Norwich Union Risk Services, explained: “’Permit to Work’ is the backbone for safe operation of many maintenance activities and it is important to ensure that those responsible for authorising and accepting permits are trained. This is an excellent course to enable participants to understand the importance of permit controls, and the role they play in ensuring a safe working environment.”

He continued: “Our course includes practical elements that can be tailored to the client company’s system.”

Diverseylever, a Northampton-based company that provides cleaning and hygiene solutions across a wide range of industry sectors, recently used Norwich Union Risk Services to provide in-house training at their manufacturing facility in Runcorn.

Steve Dew, safety advisor for the Diverseylever site at Runcorn, commented: “We had two primary purposes for running the course - firstly as a refresher day for experienced staff and secondly as an introductory session for first timers. The course proved to be highly valuable and relevant to both levels, making excellent use of case studies, enabling delegates to apply the ‘Permit to Work’ principle back in the workplace.”

He continued: “Above all, the course dovetailed perfectly with our site ‘Permit to Work’ training and review of our ‘Permit to Work’ systems, and with the IOSH accreditation I felt assured that the training was of the highest possible standard.”

Notes to editors:

  • A ‘Permit to Work’ is a form designed to document safe systems of work, usually where the potential hazard is significant and a formal documented system is appropriate to control the work. The aim is to remove both unsafe conditions and human error by imposing a formal system, which requires formal action.
