With a 20 to 25 knot wind in its sails, Delta Lloyd enjoyed a fitting end to a successful year under sail. After sailing the world in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 and being trucked to the Beursplein, the square in front of the stock-exchange in Amsterdam, for Delta Lloyd’s stock-market flotation, Delta Lloyd has now broken the Pleomax’s North Sea Record with a time of 5 hours, 36 minutes and 18 seconds.
The record-breaking time was set by a team led by the most successful Dutch skipper Bouwe Bekking, leading Dutch yachtsmen with Olympic, Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup experience, and Delta Lloyd employees.
The Delta Lloyd set sail at 9.15am (Dutch time). The conditions were not favourable, with a south-east veering south wind and lots of rain. With wind-force up to 5/6, Delta Lloyd covered the 105 nautical miles (200 kilometres) from Lowestoft in the UK to IJmuiden in the Netherlands at an average speed of approximately 17/18 knots.
Bouwe Bekking and Delta Lloyd director Paul Medendorp were united in their reaction: “This has been a fantastic experience. We are proud of breaking the record with this mixed crew. There were formidable professionals on board alongside and enthusiastic amateurs and together, through hard work, they have posted a fantastic record.”
