Delta Lloyd is taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race with its own team. Ad Schellen, the fund manager for the Delta Lloyd L Water & Climate Fund, is accompanying the race with investment tips from his fund's portfolio.
Delta Lloyd is taking part in the world's longest and hardest sailing regatta, the Volvo Ocean Race, with its own boat. The race started on 10 October in Alicante, Spain, and will end nine months later in St Petersburg, Russia.
Over that time the teams will voyage more than 37,000 nautical miles, or around 68,500 km, stopping off along the way in Cape Town, Kochi (India), Singapore, Qingdao (China), Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway (Republic of Ireland), Gothenburg and Stockholm. The race is the ultimate combination of sporting competition and high adventure, offering a unique mix of glamour on land and top sporting performance at sea.
Ad Schellen, fund manager of the Delta Lloyd L Water & Climate Fund, will be accompanying the race with investment tips from his fund's portfolio at every stage. The first leg started last Saturday in Spain, where the fund invests in the company Gamesa Corp Technologica SA: "Gamesa is a specialist in technologies in the field of renewable energies, focusing mainly on wind power.
"It is a market leader here in Spain and well positioned globally, with a market share of around 15%. The company produces turbines for wind power generators and also offers expertise on designing wind farms and a wide range of solutions for all kind of energy problems," says Ad Schellen.
"Gamesa's turbines, with a total output of around 13,000 MW, can be found in 20 countries over four continents, where they are helping to reduce emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. Additionally, wind farms are being developed in Europe, America and Asia with output of up to 21,000 MW. This puts Gamesa into a very good position for the future, to continue playing a vital role in promoting and developing wind energy in Europe and throughout the world," Schellen continues.
The Delta Lloyd L Water & Climate share fund, which invests globally, has been available in Germany since 15 November 2007. Its portfolio includes fast-growing companies which develop technologies to deal with global water shortages and world-wide climate change. The fund focuses on the four elements of water, air, earth and fire, and invests in companies whose products or services are connected to these four elements. The fund management adjusts the relative weighting of each of the four segments depending on requirements and is continually assessing the composition of the portfolio on the basis of sectorial and individual value analyses.
The manager of the fund, Ad Schellen, has more than 20 years' experience in selecting companies whose technologies or services have a contribution to make to the problems of water and climate. He is a member of a four-strong team for thematic share investments, who provide him with support in selecting stocks. The Delta Lloyd Asset Management share team is made up of 25 people in total.
Ad Schellen's investment strategy for the Delta Lloyd L Water & Climate Fund aims to achieve the highest possible absolute return over the longer term. In doing so, he does not align himself to a benchmark index, but remains flexible in his choice of investments and keeps his correlation to the total market low. Fund manager Ad Schellen and his team choose between 25 and 40 stocks, on the basis of both individual criteria (bottom-up) and an analysis of the total market or individual sectors (top-down).
The fund invests internationally, irrespective of the company's market capitalisation or region of origin. The portfolio also includes second-tier stocks, which get less attention from the market and offer very interesting potential returns from the point of view of the fund manager.
