Romania: Aviva reaches out to children in need

On Saturday 24 November 2007, the Antena 1 television channel, in collaboration with Antena 2, 3, 4, Euforia TV and the "Mereu Aproape" ("Always Near") Foundation, organised a Teledon event in support of the "Maria Sklodowska Curie" (formerly Budimex) Children's Emergency Hospital.

It was a special broadcast, which aimed to bring to the attention of the viewing public the extreme situations endured by children with health problems, as well as to highlight the efforts of doctors at the Children's Emergency Hospital who have fought hard, in utterly inauspicious circumstances, to save them. The stories of children whose lives were saved were presented live on air by the young patients and their families. It was a "marathon broadcast", lasting nearly four hours and presented by Mihaela Rădulescu accompanied by stars of the Antena channels.

By the end of the telethon €612,000 had been raised. This amount is the result of thousands of SMS text messages sent by Antena 1 viewers who were touched by the dramatic stories of the sick children, but also the result of direct donations made by various companies and individuals.

Aviva was the first company to respond positively to the call put out by the organisers, donating €10,000 during the course of the broadcast in order to provide the hospital with the very latest medical equipment. However, the donation is not limited to this amount. In addition, the company will donate 1 RON for every customer who signs up for a private pension with Aviva between 24 November and 8 December 2007. The cheque will be handed over during the "Duminica în familie" programme, on 9 December 2007.

Thus, each Romanian who chooses a private pension with Aviva in that timeframe is contributing indirectly to increasing the donation to the Children's Emergency Hospital.

"I'm delighted that Aviva has once again had the opportunity to involve itself in the community in which it operates. I believe that it's perfectly normal to help those in need, especially when their lives depend on something which can be bought, and the whole thing depends on a concerted financial push. I hope that on 9 December we can top up this amount with a similar or even larger one, because practically every Romanian can contribute to increasing this amount by choosing Aviva as the administrator of their private pension," stated Shah Rouf, CEO, Aviva Romania.
