The Phase 2 Launch of Project ACORN, an environmental accreditation initiative for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), sponsored by the DTI and run by the British Standards Institute (BSI) was held at the DTI Conference Centre on Tuesday, 30th May 2000. CGNU is a founder member of the Corporate Environmental Network, which supports the project.

This pilot phase of the project aims to help SMEs improve their environmental performance through training in environmental management. There are five levels to the process, through which SME candidates may gradually progress. At the highest level, conversion to attainment of ISO 14001 is a relatively easy step.

CGNU have 12 of its suppliers participating in the pilot, 9 of whom are direct suppliers, with the remaining 3 being Claims suppliers.

CGNU has also recently run a workshop for its Purchasing Department, ensuring they have the necessary expertise to help guide their suppliers through the scheme.
