Metropolitan Harriers and St Brigid’s Athletic Club is delighted to announce details of the Aviva Gerry Farnan Cross Country Festival, to be held adjacent to the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park on Sunday 17 October, 2010.
Ireland’s leading senior and junior runners are expected to compete in the annual Aviva Gerry Farnan Cross Country Festival. Top runners confirmed for the men’s race are Mark Christie, Joe Sweeney, Breandan O’ Neill, with defending champion Mary Cullen and Fionnuala Britton in the women’s race. The Athletics Association of Ireland International selectors will use the races to monitor the progress of our potential team candidates for the European Cross Country Championships to be held in Portugal in December.
The festival also provides joggers an opportunity to get off the roads and to test their fitness over the rolling cross country Munich lap in the Phoenix Park. Running enthusiasts of all levels can register for the race at www.msbac.ie.
The Aviva Gerry Farnan Cross Country Festival will commence with the Dublin Athletic Board’s juvenile league races for boys and girls, then the Dublin Championships for boys and girls under 18. The feature races will be the Gerry Farnan Men’s race over five miles and the Sheila Brennan Women’s race over three miles, while the Masters events will act as trials for the teams competing in the forthcoming International Cross Country.
As well as generous individual prize money there are also cash awards to the leading club teams. All participants will receive a souvenir tee shirt and goodie bag.
Club President and race director, Eamonn Coghlan extended his appreciation to Aviva for the sponsorship of this most important cross-country event on the Irish Athletics calendar, this year. Without our sponsor we would not be in a position to host the event and to celebrate the memory of our club’s great coach and mentor, Gerry Farnan.
Vanessa Hartley, group marketing director of Aviva Ireland, said: “Aviva is delighted to sponsor this year’s Gerry Farnan Cross Country Festival. This event recognises Ireland’s most talented junior and senior runners and celebrates the memory of Gerry Farnan. Aviva is proud to endorse any initiative that supports Ireland’s young and aspiring athletes.”
