On Tuesday 9 June the Delta Lloyd Gate Race is taking place off the coast at the Hook of Holland. This race forms part of the Volvo Ocean Race and can be followed live by the public on the water and from the beach at the Hook of Holland.
The teams in the Volvo Ocean Race, the boat race involving V-70 boats and 37,000 nautical miles around the world, are sailing, during the Delta Lloyd Gate race, around two buoys located approximately three miles off the coast. The Delta Lloyd Gate is on the route of the eighth leg from Ireland to Gothenburg, Sweden. From Gothenburg the Volvo Ocean Race fleet sails on to Stockholm to finish at the end of June in St Petersburg.
Challenge
Delta Lloyd is challenging all (amateur and professional) yachtsmen to sail in their own boats in the Delta Lloyd Gate Race and to try to be quicker than the Volvo Ocean Racers. The official start boat with a confirmed time in the Volvo Ocean Race keeps to the leg times and records the quickest time.
The top prize in the amateur sailing competition is a trip to the finish of the Volvo Ocean Race in St Petersburg. Also sailing in the competition will be several members of the Dutch Olympic Core Team. Applications for this unique challenge can be made until 26 May this year via www.teamdeltalloyd.nl/
Hook of Holland beach party
On the Hook of Holland beach Delta Lloyd is organising, in collaboration with the municipality of Rotterdam, a free party open to the public. You can see the Delta Lloyd Gate Race from the beach party (from the vantage point of the Beach Club Royal), depending on weather conditions. The spectacular race can also be followed on big screens and various other activities for the public are taking place. The party concludes with the prize giving ceremony for the amateur competition and an appearance by Ilse DeLange.
Ahmed Aboutaleb, mayor of Rotterdam, says: "Rotterdam is proud that this unique sailing extravaganza is gracing the Sporting City of Rotterdam.
"In line with our sporting (international) ambitions an event such as this fits perfectly into our event portfolio. One of our aims is precisely to bring big, international events to the city. With the Grand Départ du Tour de France and a large number of different World Championships and European Championships Rotterdam is on the right track."
