With Team Delta Lloyd, Delta Lloyd is ensuring Dutch participation in the Volvo Ocean Race for 2008/2009. Team Delta Lloyd is taking part with the winning boat from the previous Volvo Ocean Race. This yacht was designed by the designer Juan Kouyoumdijan and over the past few months it has been completely refitted and adapted to the demands that will be placed on it by the upcoming race. Team Delta Lloyd is sailing under the Dutch flag with sail number NED1.
The international crew, led by Irish captain Ger O'Rourke, is made up of Dutch ocean sailors and team members from Chieftain Racing. Just before the start, Team Delta Lloyd will be presenting the definitive line-up of the team of 10 sailors. Ger O'Rourke, together with his successful Chieftain Racing Team, was the winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race, amongst others.
Rotterdam as sub-sponsor
Following the success of the race in 2006 the Rotterdam Port Authorities and the Rotterdam municipal council are sub-sponsoring Team Delta Lloyd. The remaining partners are the Irish companies Chieftain and McConnells and the international clothing brand Tommy Hilfiger. They are the official clothing partners for Team Delta Lloyd's off-shore and in-shore races. The team is supported by the microcredit bank Finca.
Delta Lloyd and watersport
Delta Lloyd is a leading sponsor of water sports in the Netherlands. Delta Lloyd supports amongst others the Dutch core crew, the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, and sponsors the Open Dutch Championships Olympic classes. In order to reach the top three position in the Dutch market, Delta Lloyd will henceforth be investing heavily in visibility, so as to build an even stronger brand and to grow into the market leader position. Sponsorship of the Volvo Ocean Race fits in well with this.
