Overview
Aviva is proud to take action with partners to help protect and restore nature and improve employability prospects across Bristol and into Gloucestershire. We aim to drive positive change in local communities.
Protecting and restoring nature
Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust
Aviva is helping to protect and restore nature through its partnership with the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT). Together, we are supporting an ambitious programme to reverse the decline of the UK’s saltmarshes as climate-critical wetlands that store carbon, boost biodiversity and protect communities from flooding. Our funding is enabling WWT to create one of the UK’s largest new saltmarsh restoration sites on the Severn Estuary, where scientific research, habitat design and community engagement are underway to bring this ecosystem back to life.
This work includes land acquisition at Awre in the Forest of Dean, detailed ecological surveys and engineering design to reintroduce tidal flows, and the installation of long-term monitoring equipment to understand how restored wetlands can benefit people and nature. Alongside this, Aviva colleagues are contributing through volunteering at WWT sites across Gloucestershire and wider in the UK - supporting habitat management, biodiversity monitoring and nature recovery activities that enhance wetland resilience. Together, these efforts are helping build the evidence base for large-scale wetland restoration and ensuring communities remain at the heart of environmental change.
Improving employability prospects
Youth Guarantee and Bristol WORKS
Aviva have an ongoing collaboration with Bristol City Council, West of England Combined Authority and Bristol One City with a commitment to support targeted employability programmes including Youth Guarantee and Bristol WORKS. This has involved providing business encounters and meaningful experiences of work for young people at risk of becoming not in education, employment or training (NEET) and inspiring the future diverse talent of the region.
As part of Bristol WORKS, we are delivering experiences of the workplace with secondary school students. Aviva and Bristol WORKS are piloting targeted programmes - such as finance and technology sessions for local priority schools - delivered by Aviva colleagues. These are designed to be scalable and replicable, with the aim of embedding employability support into the heart of the community.
