Aviva, the world’s fifth largest insurance group, has announced its trading figures for 2009. It was a year of significant growth for Aviva and a strong return to profit. Aviva plc recorded a net profit after tax of £1.315 billion for 2009, ie approximately CZK 39.2 billion.
Andrew Moss, group chief executive of Aviva plc, had this to say about the trading results: “Despite the challenging economic situation, we focused on profitability and attempted to optimise our capital and realign our portfolio through the successful IPO of Delta Lloyd and sale of our Australian market. We reduced our costs through creating a simpler, more modern way of doing business, reflecting the changing way in which we communicate with our customers.
"As we steer Aviva forwards, we will maintain our disciplined approach towards capital and profitability. We anticipate that it will continue to be impossible to predict the development of the business environment, but we have been encouraged by the first signs of a willingness to save more which were evident among our customers in the final quarter of last year.
"We are focusing on boosting the profitability of life and general insurance, increasing third-party assets under management and continue maximising the benefits offered through being a single global financial group. World economies are starting to recover and we are going to aspire for a market share based on the strength of our brand, products and distribution.”
Aviva’s European arm contributed to the positive results with an 18% increase in operating profit from life and pensions insurance (long-term business, 2009: £1,038 million / 2008: £881 million). In the Czech Republic Aviva currently offers life insurance products via Aviva životní pojišťovna, as, which recorded approximately 7% growth in regularly paid premiums with the same level of new business as the previous year.
