Ireland: On yer bike for Cycling Ireland Hibernian National Bike Week

The second annual Hibernian National Bike Week starts this Sunday 21 September and runs for one week.

The second annual Hibernian National Bike Week starts this Sunday 21 September and runs for one week. The nationwide campaign to encourage people to get cycling is sponsored by the Hibernian insurance group and organised by Cycling Ireland. The main theme of this year's National Bike Week is "Bike to Work" and is in aid of the Irish Diabetes Federation.

This year the annual European Car Free Day coincides with the first working day of Hibernian National Bike Week on Monday 22 September, an added incentive to encourage people within a distance of 10km or less to get on their bikes to work.

As well as encouraging more people to bike to work, a series of additional events and activities will take place during Hibernian National Bike Week, including a series of pedal picnics, which take place on Sunday 21 September nationwide, a Dublin Bay Fun Cycle on Sunday 21 September from Howth to Blackrock and back, and a Hibernian Coast to Coast cycle over the weekend of 27/28 September from Dublin to Galway and back.

Announcing Cycling Ireland Hibernian National Bike Week, PJ Nolan, president of Cycling Ireland said: "Cycling is a healthy, enjoyable, affordable and friendly lifetime activity for everyone. In addition to raising valuable funds for the Irish Diabetes Federation of Ireland, we hope to increase commuter, recreational and leisure cycling throughout Ireland

Ciaran Mahon, head of marketing with Hibernian said: "We are delighted once again to support National Bike Week and hope that people will get their bikes out and attend some of the many events taking place during the week."
