- Amber weather warning as Storm Floris hits the UK in August
Natalie Howarth, Customer Operations Manager: “Storm Floris is set to hit many parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North East today and there are a few simple steps householders can take in order to protect both themselves and their homes from the ongoing unusual weather conditions for this time of year.
“The most important action is to keep up to date with local weather warnings to know when the worst weather is expected to hit where you live. Make sure any loose items that could potentially become dangerous projectiles in storm conditions, are stored away in advance of the expected gales. We have previously seen a lot of trampolines in the air. Secure what you can to keep disruption and damage to a minimum.”
Simple tips before high winds strike:
- Shut and lock all windows and doors. Damage to garage and shed doors are common claims so be sure to keep these closed and locked when not in use. This will not only prevent the wind blowing them off the hinges, but it is also good practice to keep your property secure to avoid falling victim to an opportunist burglary
- Remove any debris or loose items from outside your home, while it is safe to do so
- If possible, put your car in a garage or avoid parking near trees and other objects that could become unstable
- Check where your family and any pets will be during the storm
- Be prepared for power cuts by having a torch and blanket to hand
- Now is not the time to get the ladder out for a roof inspection, but make a note of any repairs that will prevent damage in the future
Howarth continues: “We take every weather warning extremely seriously, and have emergency action plans into place. We have teams on the ground and on the phones ready to assist customers if they need to make a claim. Our priority is reassuring householders and getting them back in their home as quickly as possible.”
If your home has been affected by Storm Floris:
- Get in touch with your insurer as soon as possible. Direct Line will usually pay for emergency repairs that need to be carried out to stop the damage getting worse
- Take photographs of anything that has been damaged as a result of storms, as this can speed up the settlement of your claim
- Use a plastic sheet or tarpaulin to temporarily repair storm-damaged roofs
- Whilst nearly half of all weather-related claims are due to roof damage, your personal safety is paramount. If it is not safe to do so, do not attempt temporary repairs
