Could you afford to live on a £100,000 pension pot?

  • 56% of UK working age adults worry they will not have enough money for an adequate standard of living
  • Three in ten (29%) have not considered or do not know how much they will need to have a comfortable retirement
  • More than half (54%) of UK pension savers have two or more pension pots
  • 62% report gaps in employment can lead to gaps in their pension contributions
  • Half (50%) have either no understanding of annuities, or have never heard of them

More than one in ten UK working age adults (13%) believe that up to £100,000 in a pension pot would be enough to support them through later life, according to Aviva research.

For some people, £100,000 may be enough when combined with the State Pension or other sources of retirement income. But how far any pension pot will stretch depends on individual circumstances and the lifestyle someone wants in retirement. Three in ten (29%) say they have had not considered, or did not know, the income needed for a comfortable retirement, while 56% worry they will not have enough money to maintain an adequate standard of living.

To put £100,000 into context, it could currently buy a single life annuity income of around £8,000 a year[1], or about £667 a month, for a healthy 65-year-old. The actual income will vary depending on factors including age, health, annuity rates at the time and the options chosen.

How much someone needs will depend on their circumstances, including the age they retire, the lifestyle they would like and other sources of retirement income, such as the State Pension, savings or property income.

The research also shows how changing jobs and circumstances can make retirement planning harder to track. More than half of pension savers (54%) have two or more pension pots, while 62% report gaps in employment that can lead to gaps in their pension contributions.

As people approach retirement, understanding the choices available to turn a pension pot into an income at retirement can be another hurdle. More than half of adults (50%) say they have little or no understanding of annuities.

There is no magic number that will be right for everyone. Start with the retirement you want, work out roughly what it might cost and then look at whether what you have saved so far is on track.

Aviva is publishing the findings during Talk Money Week, which runs from 2 to 6 November 2026. This year’s theme, “It All Counts”, focuses on realistic, manageable actions that can help people build financial confidence.

Alistair McQueen, Head of Savings and Retirement at Aviva, said:  “£100,000 sounds like a lot of money, but retirement can last for decades. That’s why it is helpful to think about a pension as the income it will need to provide, rather than the size of the pot as a whole.

“There is no magic number that will be right for everyone. Start with the retirement you want, work out roughly what it might cost and then look at whether what you have saved so far is on track.

“You do not need to become a pensions expert to get started. Take a look at your pensions, track down any pots from previous jobs and get to know the choices you’ll have later in life. Talk Money Week is a good prompt to take one manageable action, because it all counts.”

Methodology:

Research was conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Aviva among 4,000 UK adults aged 18–66 via an online survey between 28 May and 9 June 2026. The final addressable-market sample was 3,881 adults (defined as non-retired adults who are household financial decision-makers; those relying solely on defined benefit pensions were excluded), including 262 self-employed respondents. Quotas and weighting were applied to ensure the sample was nationally representative on age, gender, region, ethnicity, working status and personal income.
