Metal theft could affect easter for worshipers and commuters

  • One in five believe their local church has been stripped of metal
  • North East most prolific area for metal theft

New research from Direct Line home insurance reveals that one in five people say that a church in their local area has been targeted by metal thieves. This rises to over a third in the North East of England.

More chaos for commuters this Easter
As if the strikes and fuel crisis have not caused enough chaos already, the research also revealed that one in ten respondents have experienced rail travel disruption as a result of metal theft. It is not just trains that have been affected, 13 per cent of respondents said that the road infrastructure in their local area has been targeted by metal thieves.

It’s coming home . . .
Kate Syred, commercial director at Direct Line home insurance, said:
“Theft of lead flashing from flat roofs, wrought iron gates, railings, and even copper pipes are becoming common claims. Householders should check they are covered under their home insurance, not only for metal theft, but for any consequential damage to your home.”
