Greater London is the most popular area in England and Wales for cycling as a method of travel to work, according to new analysis1 by Privilege Home Insurance. Of the 741,000 commuters who cycle to their workplace in England and Wales, a fifth (21 per cent) live in Greater London.
The next most popular local authorities for commuters who cycle are Cambridgeshire (29,689 cyclists), Greater Manchester (25,161 cyclists) and Oxfordshire (23,101) cyclists.
Top 10 local authorities for bicycle use (as a method of travel to work)
By comparison, the local authorities with the smallest numbers of commuters who cycle are Merthyr Tydfil (80 cyclists), Blaenau Gwent (134 cyclists) and the Isles of Scilly (186 cyclists).
Dan Simson, head of Privilege Home Insurance commented: “Cycling is a healthy, cost effective and eco-friendly means of transport and it’s encouraging to see how many people choose to cycle to work around the country. It is, of course, very important for cyclists to stay safe whilst commuting and to secure their bicycles once they have arrived at the workplace.
“Having a good home insurance policy that provides cycle cover both at home and whilst out and about offers the best of both worlds to our two wheeled commuters.”
Privilege Home Insurance offers bike insurance outside the home as part of their Home Insurance offer and is included as standard for Platinum customers.
