Recent school closures has left many low-income families struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table. This means many children who rely on schools for breakfast and lunch are at risk of going hungry. The DLG Community fund will provide funding for 14 community groups across Leeds to feed 1,000 children and their families with food parcels and takeaway meals.
Leeds Community Foundation’s Healthy Holidays scheme supports projects that tackle the holiday hunger, inactivity and isolation faced by some of the poorest children and their families in and around Leeds during school holidays. Since lockdown with children at home full time, the demand has increased significantly. The donation from the DLG Community Fund will help many struggling families in Leeds and enable the Group to support the local community where many of our people live and work.
Kate Hainsworth, CEO of the Leeds Community Foundation, said: “With children out of school for the foreseeable future, many of those living in poverty no longer have access to one of their main meals each day. The stress this causes has a long-term impact on children’s physical, mental and social wellbeing. Thanks to Direct Line Group we can now give more children and their families the certainty of one good meal a day.”
In response to the Covid-19 crisis, Leeds Community Foundation has set up the Leeds Resilience Fund. You can find out more about this here. For more information about Leeds Community Foundation click here: https://leedscf.org.uk/
