Aviva appoints Mark Thompson as Chair of Independent Governance Committee

Aviva has appointed Mark Thompson as Chair of the UK Life and Pensions (UKLAP) Independent Governance Committee (IGC), effective 1 October 2026.

Mark brings nearly four decades of experience in the UK pensions industry having held several senior investment and governance roles, including serving as Chief Investment Officer of the HSBC UK Pension Scheme and trustee positions across both defined benefit and defined contribution pension arrangements.

He also served on the Independent Governance Committees of Zurich and Scottish Widows and currently chairs the trustee boards of the Prudential Staff Pension Scheme and the M&G Staff Pension Scheme.

The IGC provides independent oversight of Aviva's workplace pension arrangements, helping ensure customers receive value for money and that their interests remain at the heart of decision-making.

Mark succeeds Colin Richardson, who is stepping down from the role after completing his term as Chair.

Mark's appointment as Chair of the Independent Governance Committee will take effect from 1 October 2026 and remains subject to the satisfactory completion of the applicable fitness and propriety checks.
