It was a simple informal affair during the launch of CIMB Aviva Malaysia’s Corporate Responsibility (CR) programmes with Persatuan Kebajikan HOPE worldwide Kuala Lumpur (HOPE worldwide) but yet genuine happiness was evident on the faces of the children who received aid in the form of scholarship, pocket money and tuition fees.
With a total sponsorship of RM100,000, CIMB Aviva Malaysia will be working with HOPE worldwide throughout 2011 on four CR programmes which will benefit 170 children living around the Sentul, Jalan Ipoh and Gombak areas. The four programmes are:
| Programme | Brief description | |
| 1 | Street to School Scholarship | Monthly scholarships where the children must show progress in their academic results. |
| 2 | MyPocket Money | Monthly pocket money for meals at school. |
| 3 | After School Education Support | After school tuition lessons to improve weakest school subjects. |
| 4 | Back to School | Support in preparation for the new school year through the supply of new school uniform, shoes, bag and stationery. |
As the above programmes have been developed with the objective of supporting the educational needs of underprivileged children, these 170 children were selected based on their families’ financial background as well as their academic potential.
“Our CR initiatives are modelled on Aviva’s global community programme termed Street to School, a programme that aims to improve the lives of young people by helping them get off the streets and into school. Since its launch a year ago, Aviva units have reached out to 128,000 children as well as established 17 charity partnerships worldwide,” said Angela Christine Tan, director of proposition & distribution management, CIMB Aviva Malaysia.
“At CIMB Aviva, we’re in the business of providing prosperity and peace of mind to our customers and we believe in having a constructive role in the communities in which we operate. Locally, we decided to work with HOPE worldwide as the organisation manages a series of programmes for the vulnerable and disadvantaged throughout Malaysia and is able to connect us directly to the many children in need of support.
"Our ambition is to help as many children as we can to complete the minimum years of school so that they can make a real difference to their lives,” Angela added.
“We are very glad that CIMB Aviva has selected HOPE worldwide as its charity partner here in Malaysia. Their Street to School is a great concept as it offers financial aid to disadvantaged children, giving them the hope and means to continue their studies. The support from CIMB Aviva is especially meaningful and timely as we have had so many cases of children dropping out from school due to financial difficulties,” said Katy Lee, executive director of HOPE worldwide.
Held at the HOPE worldwide Centre in Sentul on 28 April 2011, the event saw the participation of some of the 170 sponsored children and their family members as well as representatives from CIMB Aviva Malaysia.
