Aviva France, a major player in long-term life and savings insurance, asset management and damage insurance, has published “Dependency – (In)dependencies”. A report raising public awareness on the need to increase solidarity across generations and develop tangible solutions to cover the costs of a loss in autonomy.
This publication is part of a larger initiative which began early 2010 with the launch of the Link between the Generations Observation Centre.
Day after day, the loss of autonomy becomes an increasing challenge for us all. The greying of the population is progressing and despite medical advances, it is often accompanied by a loss of autonomy on various levels.
According to INSEE, the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies, there will be 22.3 million people aged 60 or over in 2050 compared to 14.8 million to date, ie an increase of 50% in 40 years. The loss of autonomy is both a financial issue as well as a social and human challenge. It has become crucial to overcome this problem, to find the means to take on this loss of autonomy without curbing any growth and ideally, to leave no-one behind.
Early 2009, Aviva France became the first insurance company to publicly encourage the creation of a universal dependency care insurance plan: public authorities would set up the core plan and organisations would add to it as they see fit.
Aiming to encourage debate and exchanges on the challenges of solidarity, Aviva France launched the Link between the Generations Observations Centre in 2010 (www.questions-generation.fr).
This publication is a step forward in that direction. Through photos and interviews, it reveals the material realities of dependent people and those who assist them on a daily basis: doctors, psychologists, carers, associations and host families. Odette, Claude, Marie, Melha…, “tell us that life, even when one is very dependent, can remain meaningful”, explains Michel Poncet who prefaced the report and is a neuropsychiatrist and president of IMA, France’s Alzheimer's Disease Institute in Timone Hospital (Marseille).
The interviews were carried out by two journalists and one photographer, between January and March 2009, and once completed, were uploaded on www.questions-generation.fr.
The report is the culmination of this significant effort. Printed in 2,500 copies, it is mainly addressed to all those currently working on increasing political and legal awareness of this risk; it is available to all on www.questions-generation.fr.
This publication sheds new light on the need to increase solidarity across generations; its pressing message is to find tangible solutions to cover the costs of a loss in autonomy. In the hope that these insights into daily lives will lead to real progress.
