Lithuania: Aviva Lithuania paid 4.4 million litai in life insurance payouts

Over the first half of 2009, the most payouts for insured events (death, injury, health problems, etc) in our country were paid by Aviva Lithuania. The amount was 4.4 million litai, which was 46% more than over the same period last year.

Over the first half of 2009, the most payouts for insured events (death, injury, health problems, etc) in our country were paid by Aviva Lithuania. The amount was 4.4 million litai, which was 46% more than over the same period last year. That was a larger amount than for any other life insurance company, and represented 31% of all payouts. In all, the insurance market paid out 14.3 million litai, 38% more than over the same period last year.

Last year Aviva Lithuania paid most such payouts for traumas and accidents. This year most payments were for deaths: in the first half of this year, life insurance and pension companies had already paid out more than for the whole of the previous year, almost 2 million litai. The average death benefit had also grown: this year it is one-fifth larger than last and exceeds 47,000 litai. The average payout for all insured events over the first half of the year was more than 2,000 litai, and the largest payout this year exceeded 250,000 litai.

“The largest payouts went to help clients’ next of kin when faced with the greatest misfortunes,” said Asta Ungulaitienė, general manager of Aviva Lithuania. “This year we paid more than 50,000 litai to the family of two very young children when their young mother died of cancer. The family of a woman who was killed as the passenger in a car accident was helped greatly by a payout of more than 250,000 litai. In different circumstances, if no insurance payout had been received after this accident, the family, who lost their main breadwinner and had no assistance from extended family, might have ended up on the poverty line in these times of hardship.”

According to Aviva Lithuania statistics, the most common injuries this year have been torn ligaments and contusions, which accounted for 16% of all injury payouts. Also frequent were breaks of fingers and other bones: 12%. Another 12% was paid out to people who remained scarred after injuries or burns. Traumas of the knee, head and eyes were common.

The most common problems treated for hospitalised patients were gynaecological, accounting for 11% of all payouts for treatment for hospitalised patients. In second place were diseases of the respiratory tract. Also common were day surgery services (surgery on skin diseases and suchlike), pathology of the spine (for example slipped discs) and arthroscopic operations.

Aviva Lithuania has more than 41,000 life insurance clients, and their number grew by 13% over the first half of this year. The company has a 17% share of the life insurance market. Over the eight years that it has been involved in selling life insurance in Lithuania, Aviva Lithuania has gathered momentum: our company, which paid out the lion’s share of payouts in the insurance market, also earned 5.9 million litai in profits over the first half of this year.
