Dee Caffari is today celebrating passing Cape Leeuwin, the second great cape on the Vendée Globe round the world race. Caffari has now ticked off four of the races key milestones; a successful start, turning left in the South Atlantic, passing the Cape of Good Hope and now passing Cape Leeuwin. Her two next targets are Cape Horn, at the most southerly tip of South America, and the finish back in Les Sables d'Olonne, France. (Image of Dee Caffari's milestone tick list attached).
As the countdown to Christmas continues for everyone on land, Caffari is preparing Aviva for another day in the office. She has spoken with Joff Brown, Aviva Ocean Racing project manager, to reassure her that Aviva is in tip-top condition as the halfway point approaches.
Caffari is currently in 11th position, 42 miles ahead of Frenchman Arnaud Boissieres onboard Akena Verandas.
Dee Caffari's latest diary entry received on Sunday 21 December at 3.30pm GMT:
"A quiet day and a calming day as we hear the news of Yann's rescue, Mike receiving diesel and supplies and Dominique and Loick having a rendezvous at sea. The front runners push on into the Pacific at awesome speeds while today I have been able to check through Aviva, making life easier with the kinder weather.
"A chat with my project manager today reassured us both to the state of the boat and knowing that I am reaching that half way stage allows us to assess fuel usage and make adjustments accordingly to see me through to the end. The second of the three great capes has been passed today too, so that only leaves one!"
