With a change in conditions predicted for the next forty-eight hours of the Vendée Globe, Dee Caffari is exercising caution onboard her Open 60 racing yacht Aviva.
"I may be being a little conservative, but I'd rather get through this first blow and my first downwind gale in the Southern Ocean so that I know what it's all about and I can take it from there," she said in yesterday's radio vacation interviews, organised by the Vendée Globe race press office.
Whilst aware that she needs to push as hard as possible, Caffari is conscious that in order to finish the race she must look after Aviva and herself and has prepared for the difficult conditions by gaining extra rest in advance.
At 10am Caffari was ranked in16th position, maintaining her 30 mile lead over Arnaud Boissières on Akena Vérandas.

"Maybe I am being a little too cautious. Maybe the threat of the next 48hrs weather is having a bigger effect than I realised. Maybe the sensation of surfing at 20 knots by the mercy of the waves takes some more getting used to. I know I have lost some miles today but I am struggling with the set up of Aviva and feeling happy with what she is doing.
"I am sure it is a learning curve and I will get better at it, but for now you will have to bear with me as I find my feet."
