Life insurance company Aviva životní pojišťovna is once again encouraging people to use ski helmets when practising winter sports in 2008. Aviva has supplied selected ski schools at Czech ski resorts with helmets for children and adults for this year. Pupils at the ski schools will use the helmets when learning how to ski.
Head injuries are one of the most common injuries in the Czech Republic and the death rate for head injuries is at least five times higher than for other injuries. The use of ski helmets can prevent up to 85% of injuries to the head and brain suffered by people engaged in winter sports.
"The main purpose of a life insurance policy is to provide coverage in serious situations involving a risk to life or limb. Ski helmets also offer protection against these risks, which is why we feel that there is a link between life insurance and a ski helmet. The only difference is that you can put a ski helmet on your head. Through actively promoting the wearing of ski helmets, we are demonstrating our commitment to protecting people's health and even their lives," said Milan Starý, Aviva's marketing manager, explaining the insurance company's thinking.
Aviva životní pojišťovna first started lending its weight to the "Noste přilby!" or "Get Your Helmet On!" campaign in 2006. This campaign, kick-started in the Czech Republic by SNOW Magazine, aims to change perceptions about the use of ski helmets and persuade skiers and snowboarders to use them.
