Aviva has joined hands with Chin Chuan Children's Safety Foundation, a Taiwanese charity, to launch the "Children wearing backseat belt" awareness campaign.
The campaign began with the Taipei Children's Safety Day taking the theme of "Transportation Safety". There was also a drawing contest for elementary school children.
Taiwan requires children under four years old to sit in child seats and be secured with seatbelts. But a high percentage of adults falsely believe that children older than four do not need to wear seatbelts, as long as they sit in the back of the car.
When Chris Knight, CEO of the Aviva Taiwan branch first arrived in Taiwan, he was very surprised to find that many taxis and even private cars do not have rear seatbelts. "I spot children jumping up and down in a moving car and that is very worrying," said Chris.
Taiwan has one of the top five highest fatality risks in Asia. A large number of reported fatalities and injuries are a result of negligence with seatbelts.
Chris said: "The seatbelt campaign is an example of how we are making a difference in Taiwan. Our campaign message goes beyond a safety issue - it is about how Taiwanese families keep safe now so that they may safeguard their children and their future."
