After some merry but tragic celebrations for medics who were experiencing a shortage of blood donors, the company Commercial Union Lithuania urged help to be provided. Office workers in all company departments across Lithuania arranged unpaid blood donor days. Yesterday, in Vilnius and Siauliai, offices were temporarily converted to mobile blood donor centres, where 27 company employees and insurance consultants gave blood. Altogether a total of 12 litres of blood has found its way to the city's hospitals. Today Commercial Union Lithuania organised a blood donor day in their Kaunas department, tomorrow and the day after in Jonava, Panevezys and Klaipeda. There are still almost a hundred insurance consultants and company insurance employees in these towns who have made the decision to give blood.
The company Commercial Union Lithuania Life Insurance - one of the active companies in Lithuanian promoting social responsibility - continually carries out various social projects. It has already arranged blood donor days in company departments across Lithuania for a second time. Even more employees and insurance consultants are being urged and encouraged by colleagues and are involving themselves in this voluntary action.
"We live in a modern society and it's up to us what we create every day. To give a part of your blood is very important for us all. This small gift can be just a grain of life for someone, perhaps even for an acquaintance or neighbour," says Commercial Union Lithuania Life Insurance financial director Arunas Rumskas who gives his blood freely.
Staff at the National Blood Centre even relate an occasion when an unbelievable event happened when a person who gave blood in the morning, was a casualty in an accident the same day and that evening some of his own blood was transfused back to him- doctors saw the same name and surname on the blood transfusion bag. This was not such a recent event of course, because nowadays the surnames of blood donors are recorded in codified form. However this account shows, how freely giving blood to another person can sometimes help save your own life.
The company Commercial Union Lithuania Life Insurance wants to urge other companies to arrange free blood donor days by its own example. We constantly live hurried lives sometimes lacking time to take care of other people around us. Therefore within the company socially responsible actions are organised which afford/give fine opportunities for good works.
Commercial Union Lithuania blood donor consultative doctor Olga Navickaja says that "Often, the only possibility to snatch a patient from death's jaws is a blood transfusion. This single drop of which any amount is appreciated can give life. That is why it is necessary to instil the importance of such acts in public life. Free blood donor evenings are already becoming an everyday occurrence in themselves. In Lithuania this noble tradition is still only in a stage of development.
"It is very important and gratifying that more and more people and enterprises are found who understand the necessity of giving blood. We were pleasantly surprised by the initiative shown by Commercial Union Lithuania inviting us to take blood, the attitude of the company staff, kind heartedness and merriment, this inspiring example would create a role model for others" says the blood centre doctor expressing her thoughts.
