Tidjane Thiam has become the new supervisory board chairman for Commercial Union Polska – Towarzystwo Ubezpieczeń na Życie SA (life insurance). Thiam is managing director of Aviva International in London and is responsible for Aviva group investments in countries that include Poland.

The new chairman took over his functions on 31 January of this year. The change is linked to a change of duties at Aviva head office for his predecessor, Mark Webb, who is now group director for strategy and development. Tidjane Thiam (born in 1962) began work at Aviva head office in London in 2002, when he took up the post of director for strategy and development. Previously he had spent many years (1986-1994 and 2000-2002) working for the McKinsey strategic consultancy company in places including Paris and New York, reaching the level of partner. He also worked for government institutions in the Ivory Coast, where one of the posts he occupied was that of minister for planning and development. He is a graduate of the renowned Ecole Polytechnique in Paris and of the MBA programme at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, one of the top business schools. Since 2004 he has also been a member of the Commission for Africa set up by the British government.
