Aviva and Concern India Foundation, today launched a school project in Keelamanakudy village in the Kanya Kumari district as part of their Tsunami rehabilitation work in India. This is the second initiative following Aviva’s grant to Concern India Foundation for tsunami affected earlier this year. Mr Stuart Purdy, managing director, Aviva Life Insurance unveiled the foundation stone for the school in a simple ceremony at St Anthony’s Primary School, Keelamanakudy. This was followed by prayers for the safety and well-being of the community. The school is expected to start functioning by March 2006.
Mr Stuart Purdy, managing director, Aviva Life Insurance, said: “The scale of the tragedy and the level of human loss and suffering caused by tsunami is irreversible. Aviva is in the business of helping people secure their long-term prosperity and we would like to help the families affected by Tsunami. We have already given the first lot of 10 boats to help 50 families in Colachel and the school project seeks to provide quality education to children in the area. The children have suffered both emotionally and physically during this tragic event. We hope to make a difference in the lives of the affected children through this initiative.”
Ms Kavita Shah, CEO, Concern India Foundation, said: “Concern India Foundation believes in 'helping people help themselves' and education is one of the ways in which people can become self reliant. It is our privilege to be a part of the rehabilitation process with Aviva. The social development sector together with corporate India can make a substantial contribution towards sustainable development. I congratulate Aviva for their commitment, compassion and vision.”
